What Avios are
Avios are points used across participating travel loyalty programmes. You can collect them through flights, selected cards, shopping portals, partners and transfers from compatible loyalty schemes. They are separate from airline status measures: owning many Avios does not itself grant frequent-flyer status.
Build around a goal
Start with a realistic trip and work backwards. Check which routes are available, how many points are required, what taxes and carrier charges remain, and whether seats appear on dates you can use. A points balance without an attainable redemption is just a number.
Earn through normal activity
The sustainable approach is to collect on spending you already planned. Shopping portals and partner offers can add points, while a suitable rewards card may accelerate earning. A large card bonus is never a reason to overspend or carry interest-bearing debt.
Judge redemption value
Subtract the cash charges on the reward booking from the comparable cash fare, then divide the remaining saving by the number of Avios used. Compare like with like: the same dates, baggage, flexibility and cabin. If the cash fare is unusually cheap, keeping your points may be smarter.
Protect flexibility
Reward availability can be limited. Avoid transferring flexible points until you have checked the booking you want, because transfers are often one-way. Read cancellation rules, and allow enough time to complete any transfer.
Referral bonuses are a starting boost
A referral can be useful when it has clear qualifying terms and is at least as good as joining directly. Record the landing page, complete every step and check when the bonus should arrive. Long-term value still comes from disciplined earning and thoughtful redemption.
